It's a Tuesday evening in Madrid and there are seven kids and no ball. One of them forgot it. This is the oldest bug in the beautiful game.
So one kid opens an app. A map shows a tall glass-fronted cabinet twenty metres away, four compartments, a football visible behind a transparent door in one of them. He scans a QR code. A lock clicks. He pulls out the ball, and if it feels soft there's a pump built into the unit. Game on.
An hour later the harder part. He has to put the ball back, and the machine has to believe him. He sets it on a little cradle inside the compartment, and takes a photo. Inside, a weight sensor confirms something round and ball-heavy is sitting where a ball should sit. Only when both agree does the app close the loan.
That cabinet is the subject of a recently published Spanish patent, arriving shortly before Spain won the FIFA. As thousands of kids go out to play, high off the wins, this could be coming to their parks soon.

| HOW IT WORKS |
The applicant is Guillermo Martin de Leon Tosco, an individual inventor based in Valencia, who filed this as a Spanish utility model. A utility model is a lighter, faster form of protection than a full patent, common in Spain for mechanical products.
The machine itself is a modular tower of lockers. Each compartment holds one ball, resting in a circular cradle. The door is transparent, so you can see which type of ball is inside before you borrow.
The clever part is the return check, because returns are where every shared-object system leaks. The patent describes two ways to confirm a ball is actually back, a calibrated weight sensor under the cradle, and a camera that recognises the ball. The app can use either. The stronger version uses both together. One signal on its own is easy to fool. A photo can be staged. A weight pad can be tricked with any object of roughly the right heft. Requiring the picture and the sensor to agree closes the obvious cheat, swapping the ball for a brick to end your loan while keeping the ball.
Around that core, the filing loads in the features that make an outdoor machine survive outdoors. A solar panel on top with a rechargeable battery, so the unit runs where there's no mains power, a beach, a plaza, the edge of a pitch. A dual anchoring system, either a base plate with expansion bolts for hard ground, or a ballasted frame with removable weights for sand and soft surfaces, so the same product drops onto a schoolyard or a beach. An integrated pump, electronic or manual, because a shared ball is a flat ball eventually. An automatic LED inside each compartment for the return photo when light is low. And side panels the filing explicitly earmarks as advertising space, vinyl wraps or dynamic screens.
There's one more design choice that tells you who this is really for. The app can let a third party, a child with no payment method, borrow a ball charged to a parent's account, optionally only within set hours. Rent a ball between four and seven in the afternoon, on this specific locker.

Shared sports gear in public space has always died the same death. You put balls out, and they walk, get wrecked, or need a paid human to watch them. Council honesty boxes learn the hard way that the footballs can't roll back if some kid took it home. A ball with no accountability layer is just a small donation to whoever grabs it first.
The storage part is easy. The bottleneck is the return, proving the expensive thing came back and came back intact, without stationing a person there to check.

The category has a name now, sport sharing stations, and it is more crowded than a lone Valencia utility model suggests.
The closest direct match is Equip Sport, a Geneva startup founded in 2021. It runs autonomous locker stations in parks and courts, stocked with shared balls and gear, unlocked from a phone app, borrow-and-return on the spot. Equip has grown to hundreds of stations across Switzerland, Spain, Italy and France, and in early 2026 made its first North American move with stations in Surrey, British Columbia.
Then there is SportBox, out of the Netherlands and Germany, which leans toward fitness kit, kettlebells, mats, medicine balls, rather than balls to kick. Its units run on solar, open with an app or an RFID key, and carry an onboard camera specifically to trace damage back to the user who caused it. It is the same accountability instinct as the Spanish filing, arriving at it through a camera log rather than a weight-plus-photo cross-check. SportBox has real municipal traction, including a deployment of over 150 stations with the German Olympic Sports Federation.
Widen the lens and the technical cousins are the parcel-locker giants, Quadient, Cleveron, KEBA, InPost. They have solved weatherproof outdoor cabinets, app-driven electronic locks, fleet management software, at a scale no sports startup can match.
Does the Spanish inventor have a shot?

Smart lockers are a real and growing market, though the estimates spread depending on what gets counted. Mordor Intelligence puts the automated smart-locker system market at US$1.78 billion in 2025, while broader definitions from Research and Markets reach US$4.14 billion the same year.
The number that matters for this patent is narrower and points the same way, outdoor deployments are the fastest-growing slice, an 8.12% CAGR in Mordor's read, precisely because battery-powered, weatherproof units now work away from mains power.
The adjacent market is the one that actually pays. Sport sharing stations have crossed over 1,000 deployments across Europe, and the buyer is usually a municipality. The German state of Rhineland-Palatinate has offered to cover up to 90% of implementation costs for cities that install them. When a regional government is paying nine-tenths of the bill, the product is itemised under a public-health line item.
Roughly 270 million people play the game, more than any other participation sport, and over 99% of them are amateurs on streets, schoolyards and public pitches. Football's superpower is that it needs almost no equipment, one ball for twenty-two people, which is exactly why a machine that reliably supplies that one ball has more potential sites than a machine for any other sport. The 2026 World Cup across the United States, Canada and Mexico, 48 teams, final on 19 July, pours marketing budget and civic enthusiasm into grassroots access at the precise moment this kind of unit is looking for municipal buyers.

Equip Sport has raised US$5.18 million since 2021, a 5 million CHF round led by private-equity firm TNF, with Luminary Partners, Triple B and Vest Coast Capital also on the cap table. That is a modest sum, and it is the point. Roughly five million dollars has been enough to put autonomous ball lockers into hundreds of stations across Switzerland, Spain, Italy and France, and to fund a first North American toe-hold in Surrey, British Columbia in early 2026. A single-inventor Spanish utility model is filing into a category where the lead operator is still early-stage and thinly capitalised.
Think about what else this concept could be applied to, as similar operations in bike shares show bigger figures. Global bike sharing runs somewhere between US$7.8 billion and US$9.7 billion in 2025 depending on definition, with Lime the clear leader at roughly 27% share and filing for a Nasdaq IPO in mid-2026 on 29% year-over-year revenue growth. The category has already run through its consolidation phase, the May 2024 TIER-Dott merger stitched together a 427-city footprint on shared procurement and one app.
The Scar
Lime exited Derby in September 2024 after vandalism made the local operation untenable, and across bike-share hotspots malicious damage can push repair bills past one-tenth of the cost of service. This is the exact risk a solar-powered, glass-fronted ball locker inherits the moment it's bolted into a public plaza. Derby is what happens when the vandals win the unit economics.

The sharpest risk here is the child the machine is designed to serve.
The filing's own headline feature is a return photo, and its own example use case is a kid borrowing a ball charged to a parent's account. Put those together and you have a system that invites minors to photograph themselves, or their surroundings, in a public park and upload the image to a server, as a routine condition of play. The camera-plus-photo verification that makes the product clever is also a standing stream of images of children in known locations at known times. Who stores those photos, for how long, and who can pull the loan log that says a specific account borrowed a ball at this plaza at 5pm on a Tuesday, are at the core of the product.
Under European data rules, images of identifiable people, especially children, are sensitive personal data, and a municipality that deploys this becomes the responsible party.
There is a second category of harm that is really about who pays when it breaks. The unit is pitched as vandal-resistant and autonomous, mounted in exactly the public spaces where sports equipment gets wrecked most often. The accountability model assumes you can trace damage to a user. But the last person to return a ball is not always the person who cracked the transparent door overnight, and a system that names a culprit by default can name the wrong one. A cracked polycarbonate panel is cheap. A false accusation attached to a real account is not.

For a kid wanting to play, the change is fun. The ball is simply there, and getting it takes a scan instead of a favour from an adult with a key. For a city, the change is that shared sports gear finally has a return mechanism it can trust without paying someone to watch it.
The likeliest path is in the specific idea of cross-checking a photo against a weight sensor to defeat ball-swapping, and maybe it gets absorbed by an operator who already has the stations, Equip Sport being the obvious candidate, or licensed as the one narrow claim a bigger player can't design around.
